My 2013 “Empowerment and Success” Resolutions

-> My 2013 “Family and Life” Resolutions

Moving on from the “Geek” and “Swing” Categories of my blog, I’m now into the category of: “Wealth, Health, and Happiness” which have two very important categories: “Family and Life”, and “Empowerment and Success”.

This post will cover the “Empowerment and Success” part of my life (because of course I’m saving the best …FAMILY AND LIFE … for last!!!)

2012 was a rather interesting year for me, a lot of new goals, a lot of ups, a lot of downs, a lot of swithceroos during the year. With 2013 coming on, I have found that quite a few of my priorities remain the same, while some are quite new.

As such, I decided to write…nay ..DECLARE some 2013 plans and goals in the various aspects of my life. Whether this gets read or not, who knows, but a lot of the fun in blogging and writing anddeclaring is simply to put things out into the universe.

Without further ado…

Empowerment, Independence, and Success

My “Empowerment and Success” Goals:

First… a quote:

I first want to open with a favorite quote of mine. Because initially I felt a bit strange posting these goals (a.k.a. proclamations to the universe) …because I was not sure how it was going to read or come across.

I too often forget this inspiring quote. It’s a good one and a great reminder for those who are looking forward to doing more.

The quote is from spiritual leader Marianne Williamson:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, Our presence automatically liberates others.”

That continues to inspire me to chase my dreams of Empowerment, Independence, and Success (and in doing so I hope it inspires others also!)

So..back to my goals…

I have as a category on my blog “Wealth, Health, and Happiness”. “Wealth, Health, and Happiness” are all heavily overlapping terms for me. The short version is that I am talking about abundance of the things I love and the things that make me happy!!

A big part of being happy with my family is being able to provide abundance for them in whatever makes them happy: travel, good food, fun things, etc.

For that reason, there are two parts to this section which are as follows:

We’ve attended many seminars from self-improvement mentor Marshall Sylver, and one of his mottos is:

Live Happy, Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise.

His goal is not just to make people learn how to earn money as many self-improvement mentors do, his goal is to build you from the inside first so that when you do earn your wealth (whatever that means to you) you are happy, healthy, and wise enough to make the world and your life better with it.

And By Empowerment …we mean …

I saw some interesting graphics the other day about Empowerment and Success. What they really mean is… INDEPENDENCE. The opposite? Entitlement and Dependence.

I’m sure you have hotly discussed this issue (even if in your own head) about these days you seem to hear about more and more people saying they are “entitled” to something. The dangerous trap of this: entitlement means you are dependent on something or someone.

Thus: Empowerment and Success means .. Independence and abundance for me and my loved ones!

Empowerment vs Entitlement

So here are some goals/plans/habits/affirmations!!

General Health and Well-Being

  • GOAL 1: Run two half marathons this year
  • GOAL 2: Do our One2Swing Jitterbugs “warm-up” routine three times a week
  • GOAL 3: Floss very day
  • GOAL 4: Three times a week get 7 hours of sleep
  • GOAL 5: Always give money to any “pandhandler” (a.k.a “bum”) who asks for it

Empowerment and Success

  • GOAL 6: Launch my three *NEW* internet marketing properties!
  • GOAL 7: Complete at least two of my books

Goals 1-5: General Health and Well-Being: The Details

healthy habits

The first part is focus on my own health and well-being.

Back to Marshall Sylver’s quote: “Live Happy, Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise”.

Success and money and independence without a happy center …that’s just not right.

Success and independence without all the proper faculties …that’s just not fun.

In other words, with great “power” ..comes great responsibility.

For general health..

Part of it is fitness, but part of it I feel is that karma I get just from focusing time on myself. I am telling my body and soul that I indeed think it is very important, and I want to let it know I am giving it focus and priority.

Kind of like those airline emergencies where the oxygen masks come down: you are always supposed to help yourself first before you help others – you are not of best use to serve others and help others if you yourself are not in good shape.

These goals are designed by me to develop a (my favorite word) “synergistic” well-being.

GOAL 1: Run two half marathons this year

I used to do quite a bit of distance running. And I miss it. This one is a semi-no-brainer because I have tried to train myself to get back into some distance running for years.

This year, I plan to do it. One half marathon seemed to be not as much of a stretch as I would like. Two half marathons. Now yer talking Bob.

GOAL 2: Do our One2Swing Jitterbugs “warm-up” regimen for overall body fitness

Our team warm up routine to start practice was a nice 20 to 30 minute warm-up of stretching, pushups, situps, and light jogging.

Consider that we practice three to five times a week, we were actually getting in a nice full-body fitness warm-up each and every time. Which is something I definitely miss now that team has been on hiatus.

I have come to realize (as many team members have) how nice and compact an exercise routine that was… especially done three times a week. It accomplished a lot of basic fitness in a short amount of time.

The additional part of our team fitness regimen was 5x a week to do 50 pushups and 50 situps twice a day.

So the goal? To do the One2Swing Jitterbugs team fitness regimen which means

3x a week: Do the stretching routine (or equivalent)
3x a week: light running (or equivalent ..since this overlaps with the GOAL 1: running a half marathon)
5x a week: Do 50 pushups and 50 situps twice a day (or equivalent)

That’s at least a bit of a start, isn’t it?

GOAL 3: Floss every day

A strange one, but I know my teeth could be in better shape.

Not to mention… I always feel better after flossing

Not to mention, our awesome dentist has even told me that if time only allowed him to do brushing or flossing, he’d choose flossing first.

This is just one of those strange things I procrastinate on, but when I actually do it I am glad I did.

This is one of those resolutions that I have every year and I end up petering out about March. So let’s do it again! (And by that I mean floss every day, I do not mean peter out about March)

Moreso than flossing and keeping my teeth healthy, I see this as a metaphor again for that synergistic health and well-being I want to accomplish.

(You’ll notice a common theme that I am targeting those health and fitness regimens I *know* are both good for me, and I *know* I enjoy them once I get into them, and for some reason have also fallen off from….)

GOAL 4: Three times a week get 7 hours of sleep

Kayla Sleeping
Kayla catching some shut-eye

This is a big one.. because I am a night hawk and I don’t like sleeping and, yes, it does affect my sleep. If I get six hours that’s a good night. That being said, I know eight hours is the ideal.

That being said … realistically 7 hours is a doable, and I am “challenging” myself to do it three times a week.

Why is this a priority?

This is the one goal of all the above that I don’t think I was ever on the wagon that I could fall off from. And is probably the most important.

Because I know I have a lot on my task list, and spending time with my family and my health are priorities here … and that includes sleep. Knowing I would prefer to work on my websites over sleep (the internet marketing resolution will come later in this post!), for me this resolution is not just about getting sleep, but a sign of discipline for me to put the right priorities first.

GOAL 5: Always give money to any “pandhandler” (a.k.a “bum”) who asks for it

One of Marshall Sylver’s mottos: Be an easy sell.

The idea behind this is to have an open mind. An open mind keeps you open to opportunities. Marshall likes to say:

Luck is when Preparation Meets Opportunity.

To “meet” opportunity, one has to have a ready mindset to receive. For me, that also means to not be so discriminating.

And I lately think I’ve fallen into a mindset of being discriminating.

I used to think I was an easy sell. I am friendly to phone solicitors, and I am friendly to people at work (or friends and family) who are soliciting for one reason or another.

Now let’s talk about “bums”. I use the term “bums” to mean those people who are panhandling for change, whether homeless or … addicts ..or ..?

I have noticed recently that when panhandlers ask me for money, I not only ignore them. I have noticed a small bit of subconscious “sneer” or “snobbishness” come into my head, thinking “Don’t you think you can get work?” or “If I were homeless, I would be doing everything possible to find work and be independent, and not panhandle”.

I even found that I would even reward those “panhandlers” who worked for the money, like those you would find at gas stations offering to fill up your gas tank or wash your windshield. I thought that was something to be proud of.

Until I realized it made me “sneer” at even more those panhandlers and bums simply looking for a handout.

I started being curious if this “snobbishiness” and “sneering” I felt was closing off my mind. Maybe I should be much more open minded and positive. More accepting? More loving?

Maybe I should not be so discriminatory and have such a “holier than thou” attitude if that is what it really was.

Maybe I should remember that it’s always better to be part of the answer and not a part of the question.

So this resolution: it’s just an effort to change something about myself, and say “well, why not?”

So the goal is to be non-discriminating to whomever panhandles me for money, and just give without thinking.

It will be a bit of an experiment and I’m curious if and/or how it will change how I live my life.

Goals 6-7: Empowerment and Success: The Details

Up until now, the goals to me have been the “pre-requisites” for getting myself into the proper mind for being healthy and happy and to be ready to receive abundance.

These last two goals are my goals to work towards abundance.

GOAL 6: Launch my new internet marketing properties!

I started looking into internet marketing about two years ago. There is a lot I could write about as far as internet marketing. It is a very interesting culture that brings out the best and worst in people.

The short of it is: it provides regular people a method to earn money online with little risk and considerably little investment (compared to a brick and mortar type business)

I had quite a few ups and downs until finally middle to late last year things started looking pretty steady.

And then some internet algorithms changed and I took quite a hit. This would not have been too bad except for this came right after I decided to “go big”.

Meaning I found a formula which I thought would work, and was at the point to lather-rinse-repeat so to speak.

At the time, my problem was ..I was fearful of going big. It would be quite some investment money and time wise. So I was in a bit of a holding pattern.

I then borrowed my sister-in-law’s book: “The 4 Hour Work Week”. We were on vacation and she had brought it so I started reading the first few chapters.

Let me tell you… it was really enlightening.

And it turned out just in the first two chapters the author talked about his “predicament” which closely mirrored my own situation!! (though mine was on a much much much MUCH smaller scale)

4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss

It came down to answering these questions

  • What is stopping you from doing what you know you need to do?
  • What is the upside? The possible rewards?
  • What is the downside? The worst it can get?
  • If you should suffer “the worst”, how long would it take for you to recover?
  • If you should suffer “the worst”, is it tolerable?

After going through those questions, I could see easily that my fear was mainly going into the unknown world of outsourcing, not even sure how it would work and how to put it together.. and the worst would be a bit of time and money spent. Not to mention the unknown. And not to mention …well, what if it didn’t work?

On the rewards side: The rewards were…well.. very good.

So in the end, I did it. I decided to go big.

To put it in relative terms, I had about 20 entities I was experimenting with over two years. And in the span of two months decided to build another 50 more entities.

So going from nurturing one per month to trying to build close to one per day.

And that was a whirlwind of two months: I learned a huge amount about how to set up outsourcing, that it was much much less painless than I expected on all fronts.

And then the “almost worst” thing that could happen, happened.

The algorithms that changed (I don’t want to get too into it) and it really knocked my entire formula for a loop.

What does it all mean?

About half the money I spent will be lost on assets and materials. Not recoverable.

The other half I spent on content can definitely be reused. But it will be sometime before I can get back to that point. In the end … Recoverable

More money and time spent researching how to either tweak the method, or come up with something new… Most of all: I have to go back to the drawing board a bit to figure out a formula that will work.

Which isn’t a bad thing.. because now that I stepped out into that unknown and can survive it, I am proud of myself for at least realizing what the risk was, what the recoverability was, and what the rewards were.

Which to me just increases that comfort level of being able to step out into the unknown.

That’s not so bad in the end..

And Now…

Up until mid-November: research, coming up with a new game plan, finishing all the outsourcing and gathering my “resusable” materials.

mid-November until the end of 2012 EMMITT WAS BORN! Plus holidays! Lots of family time …and Santa Swing!

January 2013 until now Focusing on my 2013 resolutions, re-dedication to the Geek/Swing part of my life, helping launch Lindy Academy.

And moving forward ….

And now come February, Lindy Academy is launched and the process is mostly in place, it’s time to get back to launching my new internet marketing assets.

I’m looking forward to it and it should be a GREAT year!

GOAL 7: Complete at least two of my books

The final goal: I have always had a number of books on my mind to publish. I would say I have four books in total I want to write

The main bottleneck?

Figuring out what the mission and vision is for each book, and who the audience is, because that affects how I will write and market it.

In other words, there is a lot in me to express, and a lot of great “content” I want to get out into the world … but I haven’t figured out the end part yet as to

“Well…. who will benefit? Whom am I trying to reach?”

The end part keeps changing in my head, which means the way I write it and present it keeps changing in my head too.

Stephen Covey’s second habit of the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People:

Habit 2: Begin With The End In Mind

So right now, the main steps are first to figure out the main end-goals of each of the books in my head. And then from there … well, the writing will probably be a lot easier.

For my goals: I just put on the list: complete two of the books.

Because one seemed like it might not stretch me enough, so I had to put two.

I’m hoping by mid-year to have my “end in mind” reached for all four of my books in my head. And then from there, just start writing and planning marketing come July until the end of the year.

And as mentioned in the previous goal:

I’m looking forward to it and it should be a GREAT year!

That’s it…

Coming Next …my final set of resolutions, and the one I’m looking forward to: My 2013 “Family and Life” Resolutions!

Thanks for reading!

And universe thanks for letting me declare!
