I wanted to share something that’s been on my mind, especially the last couple months.
It is a heavy hearted day today. Will be heading to the memorial service for my friend Sam’s mom, who passed away peacefully last week after a very brief and unexpected two month fight with cancer.
I wanted to share a famous speech by Jimmy Valvano (legendary figure in college sports) which he delivered at the 1993 ESPY awards, two months before he passed away from cancer. When the idea of cancer comes into my radar, I often think of this speech on why and how to live life to the fullest.
The words from “Don’t Give Up. Don’t Ever Give Up” that particularly move me:
“To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special”
Jimmy V was diagnosed with cancer in June 1992
He passed away April of 1993. Two months before he passed away he won the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the annual ESPN/ESPY Awards show. And the above is his acceptance speech (youtube link below)
And while it is a sad and heavy hearted day, it is also a great reminder, at least for me, to remember to every day: laugh, think, and cry, because that’s a full day, and do that every day and you’ll have a full life.
Prayers to my friend Sam and his family.
And hopes for you to have many full days ahead of you!
