VMWARE: “The VMRC console has disconnected…attempting to reconnect” vmware-vmrc.exe process

Quickie tutorial on what I am guessing is a common error encountered in vmware:

“The VMRC console has disconnected…attempting to reconnect”

While many of the online searches turned up something about reinstall the vsphere client, that did not work with me. Here’s my quickie solution:

The VMware Error

“The VMRC console has disconnected…attempting to reconnect”

This Worked For Me..
Kill Stray vmware-vmrc.exe Processes

What eventually worked for me was killing stray vmware-vmrc.exe processes.

  1. Exit your vsphere client
  2. Open your Task Manager (many ways to do this)
    1. Ctrl-Alt-Del -> Choose “Start Task Manager”
    2. Start -> Run -> Cmd and type “taskmgr.exe”
    3. Right-click the clock, in the pop up menu choose “Start Task Manager”
  3. Look for any vmware-vmrc.exe process(es). Select it, then click “End Process”
  4. Restart vsphere client

That should be it.. however, if it is not…

Possible Solutions Which Did Not Work For Me

I had taken to google and other resources. There are quite a few possible solutions out there, some may work for you, amongst them (not in any particular order)

  • close your vsphere client, restart vsphere client
  • uninstall and reinstall vsphere client
  • reboot machine
  • restart vmware management service on vsphere server
  • check that DNS is correct from vsphere client to vsphere server
  • reboot VM

Good Luck!

  1. The vmrc is not ending via task manager,
    And what exactly is a proper solution for this?
    Do we need to do this always???

  2. I am not getting any Service like vmware-vmrc.exe *32. My Operating System is windows 10 32 Bit.

    Also I am using vsphere 5.0 update 3. Please help me what can I do??

  3. I am the same as you Harnish. although i am running windows 8.1 enterprise. tried all sorts of things online and got no joy. i have a deadline of tomorrow to finish a project and i cant do it because i can’t connect to the VM to actually finish the project :(

  4. Sorry guys, I only had this problem occur when I was writing about it. It has come up a few times since then on my laptop (Windows 7) and my steps above always fixes it for me so I’m guessing root cause is different or fix is different on OS beyond Win 7
